What You Need To Know For Great Results With DIM

DIM (Diindolyl-Methane) is a powerful compound, and there are a ton of reasons to take it as a supplement: Menopause relief, correcting estrogen dominance, chronic acne reduction, weight loss. The list goes on.

Unfortunately, there are also a few ways that taking DIM can fall short of being everything that it should.

DIM is one of our most popular products at SMNutrition, so we get to hear so many exciting success stories. We also see how people fail to get optimal results.

We don't like that much, so we've compiled a quick list of things you should know about DIM to get the full benefit.

DIM Promotes The Body's Natural Metabolism Of Hormone Excesses

It's true that DIM eliminates excess estrogen (especially the excesses that come from estrogen mimicking chemicals that we absorb).

But how this happens is important to know. DIM works to bring estrogen levels back into balance by promoting our bodies' own natural metabolism of these excesses.

Why does that matter?

Because your body knows what you need. If excess estrogen has been eliminated, the body does not continue to deplete estrogen levels. In other words, some people (especially those taking DIM for menopause-related estrogen dominance) worry about their estrogen levels dropping too low, and don't take DIM as directed.

You can trust your body to metabolize only what is healthy to be rid of. DIM works by giving those smart systems a boost.

Headaches Can Happen (For A Few Days)

Headaches are one of the most common reasons people don't get the results that they should with DIM. Most people won't experience them, but it's also not uncommon at all for the first few days taking DIM to be marked by headaches, or even some slight fatigue. For those that do have this experience, it can be a little bit like the start of a detox.

If you do experience headache(s) during your first days taking DIM, there are two things that you have to know:

A. They will go away.

The headaches are not a constant result of DIM usage, but rather, the result of hormonal shift and correction that is taking place in your body. Once the most dramatic corrections have been made, and levels are no longer in flux, detox-like symptoms also disappear.

B. A rough first few days should actually be encouraging.

Because headaches and fatigue are the result of significant hormone shifting, they should actually be an encouragement that DIM is the right supplement for you.

Hormone correction that is significant enough to cause a few days of discomfort, is also hormone correction that is significant enough to make a huge difference in your ongoing hormonal health.

In fact, many of the people that have the most significant gains from DIM will experience headaches or fatigue in the first few days.

If the detox-like phase of DIM is just too much for you, we recommend adding CDG (Calcium D-Glucarate). It binds to metabolized hormones, and keeps them from sneaking back into the blood, which can greatly reduce unpleasant symptoms.

Another DIM tip that will help you with this issue is...

You Shouldn't Take DIM On An Empty Stomach

You are much less likely to experience headaches, or other symptoms in the first few days with DIM if you always take it on a full stomach.

Absorbing DIM with a healthy meal allows the body a smoother and slower absorption process. That means less potential for headache, fatigue, or other noticeable disruption.

It's equally important to make sure that you are well hydrated while you are taking DIM. The body will be breaking down hormonal excesses, and keeping a ready supply of water on hand allows the body to expel the metabolites that are being produced.

We recommend at least a couple of additional glasses of water on top of what you might ordinarily drink during the day.

Darkened Urine Is Completely Normal On DIM

Speaking of moving higher levels of liquids through the body... the color and odor of your urine will probably change when you supplement with DIM.

Most people find that their urine is noticeably darker, and some variation of burnt orange. The smell also typically becomes more pungent than before.

These changes are so common that it's actually much more rare to have no such change to urine during DIM supplementation.

Urine changes are the result of the body filtering out the broken down metabolites, as well as the DIM itself. But while the change is totally normal, they can be disconcerting if you don't know to look out for them.

Consistency Is Critical

Sadly, one of the most common reasons people fail to get everything out of DIM, is simple inconsistency.

It's something that we're all subject to. Life gets busy, and there are a million things to think about, and before you know it, you've missed three days in a row.

Don't let that be you.

Remembering to take DIM every day is important because it keeps excess estrogen at bay, and prevents stores from building up. Whether you're in the initial phase of correcting imbalances, or maintaining your corrected healthy levels, you don't want to regress and lose ground.

That's the reason that DIM by SM Nutrition has been designed to work with only one dose every day. We recommend selecting a meal where you take DIM each day. Once it's a habit, you won't have to think about it any more, and consistency won't be a problem for you!

Hello Kirsty,

We talk openly about the initial days of taking DIM feeling similar to a detox. People can experience headaches and fatigue during these days, but these symptoms go away, and are the result of the significant hormone shifting that occurs during this initial period. We’ve found that the same rule can often be true for people using DIM to address hormonal acne. During the first few days, it is possible to have breakouts and increased acne. That is because of the shifting hormone levels.

While that can be frustrating, it can also be a sign that there is a strong link between your hormones and your acne. Once the shifting has been done you’re left with new balance, and subsequent, daily DIM usage becomes about maintaining. So we encourage you to push through this initial phase, and hope that this response is encouraging to you.

If you decide for any reason that you cannot continue with the supplement, please send us a direct message and we’d be happy to honor our 100% satisfaction guarantee for any reason at all.

Hey Cheri,
It doesn’t matter what meal you take DIM with at all. What does matter is consistency, so we just recommend taking it with the meal that is most convenient so that you are taking it at about the same time each day. DIM 250 is generally our menopause recommendation. That DIM product contains additional herbal ingredients that are valuable during menopause. In terms of weight loss support, either DIM product will be comparable. Hope that helps!

Hey Arsdip,
That’s a really important question, and critical for people in your position to know that this is completely normal. More than normal, it is actually fairly encouraging in terms of DIM’s potential to help clear skin. The initial days with DIM create hormone shifts, so hormonal acne can actually worsen briefly. But after the initial shift, DIM does stand to make a big improvement. We recommend using for one month to clearly see where DIM stands to get you!

Hey Laura,
We don’t have a discontinuation recommendation for DIM, and we actually like for people to use it for about 30 days to see what it stands to do for them moving forward, and get past the initial transition. DIM is about keeping excess estrogen metabolized, but it doesn’t cause indiscriminate metabolism of estrogen, so we don’t believe that discontinuation is important. Some people do cycle usage successfully, but that would be more about cost savings than optimal usage.

Hey Canne,
Our general recommendations regarding your questions would be to give the supplement one month of use to see what you can expect in terms of ongoing results. 20 days may be enough to show the results you need to see, but it’s a little quicker than our normal recommendation. Also, we don’t recommend discontinuing use before retesting, as there is no actual hormone content in DIM, and that should not be necessary. But it is important to note that especially because you are using this supplement under the direction of your doctor, we strongly recommend asking for their direction about both of those factors for the best personal advice.

Hello Polly,
Detox-like symptoms (headache and fatigue in particular) are not uncommon during the first few days with DIM as hormone levels are shifting. This initial phase can last for a couple of weeks, but for most people it tends to last only about 3-7 days. After levels stop shifting, those symptoms go away, and you are left with the renewed balance!

Hey Jennifer,
We don’t make a discontinuation recommendation, but we do know many people cycle DIM use successfully. Sometimes that looks like using every other day, and sometimes, it’s having periods where you stop using for a while. Everybody is different, and results will vary, so we avoid projecting too broadly, but it is often possible to do that without any loss of effectiveness.

Hey Hillary,
The initial detox-like period, and the symptoms that we associate with that are directly due to the initial fluctuation of estrogen, as balance is being achieved. And with hormone fluctuation, some moodiness is possible. We don’t hear about it a ton with this supplement, so we don’t feature it as one of the things that is to be expected normally, but it is also something that is possible during this period. The dry skin would be another issue though, and is not something that we would expect to be related to beginning DIM.

It seems like an obvious sign that it’s affecting my hormones, but I’m not sure if it’s a good or bad sign, since it’s not listed in the side effects. I’m wondering if maybe this is a sign that it’s having the opposite effect that it should?

As a general rule, the 200mg should be plenty for most people. You should absolutely push through if you’re able. Darkened urine is completely normal, and happens more frequently than not. Breast tenderness (though more rare) and initial breakout are possible during the first few days with DIM because hormone levels are actively shifting. Both DIM and CDG should be thought of in terms of their cumulative effect, so timing throughout the day is not a huge consideration. We make the general recommendation to take them together, but that is mostly about convenience. If you are planning how to use these supplements in advance of their actual use, we do recommend starting the CDG a week or two ahead of DIM to get its full impact in terms of relieving the initial days of detox-like symptoms that can accompany DIM. Hey Cayla,
Great question! When taking DIM for cystic acne it is possible to see some initial breakouts because hormone levels are shifting. February 07, 2019

Hey Michelle,
Thanks for posting your question, and we’re glad to help clear that up! DIM does not cause estrogen increases. Its function is to promote the metabolism of estrogen excesses by the body. Mostly this means estradiol and estrone, the more potent estrogens that are often actually too high, even in menopause, and especially in relation to progesterone. But DIM does not cause an increase in any estrogen variation.

Hey Abby,
Thanks for sharing about your DIM experience, and it’s great to hear what it has done for you! We do not have a recommendation for when you need to stop using the supplement, and it is our position that it can indeed be used without needed breaks. The reason for that is that DIM does not cause the indiscriminate metabolism of estrogen, but rather, the metabolism of excesses only. The risk of continued use is only diminished necessity. Many people use DIM intermittently or have periods where they discontinue, but that does allow levels to go up again, and opens the possibility of returning symptoms like you mentioned.

Hey Jonathan,
We know that it is a common usage pattern with DIM to stop supplementing after some time, and restart as needed. But that approach can also allow for the buildup of excess estrogen again over time, so that is not what we recommend, as we don’t see real downsides to continued use. Hope that helps!

Headache and fatigue during the initial days are fairly common, and where people are talking about this supplement, that issue does come up regularly. Hey Mia,
Pre/Probiotics are designed to improve the bacterial environment of the digestive tract, while collagen supplements are nutritional, and meant to provide you with the various proteins that the body needs. DIM, on the other hand is about estrogen balance and (while we don’t currently deal with those supplements) we don’t see any reason to be concerned about any crossover between those and DIM. As far as darkened urine is concerned, that is the one effect of DIM that tends to stick around for the duration of your use. Some fluctuation is normal as well, but in general, urine tends to be darker while using DIM.

Hi! I would like to start taking DIM supplements. I’m currently taking collagen and prebiotic/probiotic supplements. I’m wondering if this would be okay to take with DIM? And would the darkened urine go away over time?
Thanks!

Hey Kari,
It’s great to hear about your skin clearing up with DIM, and we would encourage you to stick with the supplement for a little while longer. DIM, and the resulting metabolism of estrogen excesses should not be associated with weight gain. Because DIM helps lower estrogen excesses, it can be a fat-loss aid, but at the very least, we do not expect this supplement to do the opposite. Hope that helps!

I started taking DIM about 3 weeks ago. I was suffering from hormonal acne and my skin has cleared almost completely. My sleep pattern is now normal, so I have seen a positive result in many ways…but I have seen and felt weight gain… I hate to think I have to stop taking DIM ….. I would like to have any input with how DIM is affecting me….. Has it also affected others in this way?

I have had headaches for the four days I’ve been taking DIM 250mg. Also one day I hade some vision sensitivity, which passed after a few minutes. As a 50 yo male with breast sensitivity I’m hoping to reduce estrogen fast. In 4 days the sensitivity is considerably less

Kay,
That’s a great strategy if initial headaches are too intense. You will still be bringing yourself into balance, just more gradually than before. As the article mentions, you can also add CDG to lessen those symptoms.

I got a really bad headache after taking DIM the first time,. Can I take it every other day to ease into it? And then once I’m fine to start every.

Hey Stephanie,
DIM works by metabolizing excess estrogen, which is very common these days. There are 3 types of estrogen (Estradiol, Estrone, Estriol), and the levels are not necessarily connected. But if you know that all levels are low, DIM would not provide benefits for you. Hope that helps!

Rain,
It’s so great to hear about your recovery! We completely understand trying to do everything you can to maintain the health you’ve gotten back, and would like to help you in any way possible. Because DIM is not designed or promoted as a cancer supplement, we won’t make any of those claims here or elsewhere. But concerning the management of excess estrogen, taking extra DIM would not be a problem, but it also would not yield too much extra results. Our DIM capsules are formulated to give you about all you can use each day, so you would just see diminished returns. Hope that helps!

I am wondering if I should take two DIMs daily because I have had and recovered from estrogen positive breast cancer and I do not want to take tamoxifen. I have been taking one a day for a year at least but recently began to wonder if I might benefit from two a day?

Hey Robin,
A week is usually the longest detox-like symptoms tend to last, especially with consistent use. It’s encouraging that your headache has already started to fade, and we would suspect that you should soon be done with that phase.

How long can I expect the side effects (fatigue, headache) to last? On day 6 and still feeling quite fatigued with a (better) but slight headache. Thanks!

How long should you take DIM for?

Hey Laura,
You can absolutely still use DIM. In fact, DIM and Estro-Life are combined in our Menopause Support Bundle. We know that may seem a little counter-intuitive (supplementing estrogen while metabolizing excesses). But the key lies in the different forms of estrogen. Estro-Life supplements estriol, which is a mild form that decreases during menopause. DIM helps you metabolize excesses of estradiol and estrone, which can be artificially elevated due to modern environmental exposure. Hope that helps!
